Any unwanted or unknown pop-up appearing frequently on your mobile and computers can be a potential cybersecurity threat. The customers associated with the New Hampshire lottery fell victim to such a trick that led to the download of malicious files as soon as they clicked on the pop-up message.  It forced the firm to halt its services temporarily.

  • According to the information provided by the organization, the cyberattack did not impact any player data nor compromised the integrity of its gaming platforms.
  • The cyberattack primarily leveraged banner pages or pop-up messages designed to get users to click and download a Zip file. 
  • The organization reported that the website was taken offline.

Recommended actions

  • Users are urged to run anti-virus software if they have unknowingly opened up the Zip file. 
  • The firm further adds that anyone who accidentally clicked on the banners or pop-ups should delete files and empty the computer’s trash/recycle bin.
