Massive DDoS attacks hit multiple Cambodian ISPs nearly crippling internet services nationwide

• Several major internet service providers including EZECOM, SINET, Telcotech, and Digi were affected by the attack.
• The large-scale DDoS attacks are estimated to be the biggest in the country’s history.

A string of massive DDoS attacks has reportedly hit multiple Cambodian internet service providers (ISPs), nearly crippling internet services across the nation for around 24 hours. Several major internet service providers including EZECOM, SINET, Telcotech, and Digi were affected by the attack. The large-scale DDoS attacks are estimated to be the biggest in the country’s history.

The DDoS attacks lasted a couple of days and totaled nearly 150 Gbps, ZDNet reported. Across the nation, smaller scale DDoS attacks continued to batter local ISPs, which, in turn, led to fairly slow internet speeds.

“EZECOM has been hard at work with anti-DDoS specialists to deal with this issue, and we expect normalcy to return soon assuming no further large-scale attacks,” the firm said in a statement.

SINET also posted an official statement on Twitter, apologizing for the technical issues that were caused by the attacks.

It is still unclear as to what motivated the attacks. At present, Cambodia doesn’t appear to be experiencing any political unrest or power shifts. No hacktivists or hacker groups have assumed responsibility for the attacks either. It is still uncertain whether the ISPs targeted by the attacks received any sort of ransom demands or extortion threats.
