MapleChange hack: $6 million worth of bitcoins stolen from Canadian cryptocurrency exchange

Canadian cryptocurrency exchange, MapleChange was hit by hackers. The attack saw cybercriminals steal around $6 million worth of bitcoins. The attack occurred due to a software bug on the platform that allowed the hackers to steal the funds.

The exchange took to Twitter to notify its users about the attack. MapleChange said that it has launched an investigation into the attack.

“Due to a bug, some people have managed to withdraw all the funds from our exchange. We are in the process of a thorough investigation for this,” the firm said.

Following the attack, the exchange temporarily disabled customer accounts as a precaution security measure. MapleChange said that it will be unable to refund the customers who lost their digital funds. However, the exchange plans on providing the customers access to their wallets, allowing them to withdraw their leftover funds.

“We have not disappeared guys. We simply turned off our accounts temporarily to think this solution though. We cannot refund everyone all their funds, but we will be opening wallets to whatever we have left so people can (hopefully) withdraw their funds,” the exchange said in another tweet.

It is still unknown as how many customers have been affected by the breach. The company is also yet to figure out whether any third-party vendor was involved in the hack.

Meanwhile, in its latest post, MapleChange claimed that only $40,000 worth of 8 bitcoins were stolen in the hack. The previous estimation showed that $6 million worth of 919 bitcoins were stolen.
