It is no secret that the healthcare and manufacturing sectors are under active cyberattacks. The threat landscape has evolved dramatically and things are getting worse. Along with these two, the IT sector has also become one of the topmost targets for cyberattacks.

A recent report by Avanan shines a light on the cyberattack trends in the first half of this year.
- Companies in the IT sector witnessed more than 9,000 phishing emails, followed by healthcare and manufacturing at around 6,000 phishing emails every 30 days for every 10,000 users.
- Among all phishing attacks, credential harvesting accounted for 54%, BEC attacks took up a share of 20.7%, and extortion accounted for 2.2%.
- Instead of C-level executives, hackers have started targeting non-executives, eating a share of 77%.
Why does this matter?
While healthcare facilities are under attack by ransomware actors and manufacturing firms keep suffering from supply chain disruption, hackers have resorted to the most basic tactic—phishing emails—for unauthorized access. These sectors are highly vulnerable to cyberattacks as they manage valuable information, which is in demand in dark web markets. Moreover, facilities still use outdated tech, which when coupled with the lack of proper employee training and basic cybersecurity hygiene put these sectors in the crosshair of threat actors.

By now, we are aware of the great lengths cybercriminals will traverse to achieve their nefarious intents. Tried and tested methods like phishing and social engineering, as well as unique and sophisticated methods like supply chain hacks, are in use to gain access to unprotected or poorly protected systems. Without proper defenses, these sectors will continue being the targets of cyberattacks.
