Data breach at UiTM may have resulted in the compromise of records of over 1.16 million students

• The breach included the records of those students who were or are in the institute from 2008 to 2018.
• The data leaked online included details such as students’ names, MyKad numbers, student IDs, campus codes, residence addresses and more.

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) has suffered a data breach affecting the records of around 1,164,450 students. The breach includes the records of those students who were/are in the institute from 2008 to 2018.

Type of information compromised

According to tech website Lowyat.net, the data leaked online includes details such as students’ names, MyKad numbers, student IDs, campus codes, residence addresses, email addresses, mobile numbers and more.

The compromised records include the data of students studying in different UiTM campuses across the country, including the main campus in Shah Alam, Selangor.

When did the breach occur?

The breach is believed to have occurred between February and March last year.

Meanwhile, Prof. Datuk Hasan, Vice Chancellor Emeritus has denied that the university was hit by a breach. He has also issued a statement, giving clarification on the matter. The university claims that all its systems are safe, sound and reliable.

“Screenshots of the leaked data do not match UiTM’s internal formatting system. This shows information has been edited or manipulated by irresponsible parties,” he said, Malaymail reported.

However, as part of precautionary measures, the university would be conducting a thorough investigation in order to find out whether hackers had gained access to UiTM’s systems. It is also working towards enhancing the security measures of its systems in order to protect students’ personal data.
