BlackMediaGames, developer of online browser-based game ‘Town of Salem’ has suffered a data breach. The breach occurred on December 28, 2018, and has affected over 7 million user data.
Detecting the breach
The breach was discovered after Dehashed, a Data-Mining and Hacked Database Search Engine, received an email that included the evidence of server access and provided details of the exposed database.
“On 12/28/2018 we’ve received an email regarding the popular online RP game “Town Of Salem”s breach. The sender, who wishes to be anonymous at this time, provided DeHashed with evidence of server access and provided the complete database for disclosure,” said Dehashed in a blog post.
Type of information compromised
The users’ data affected in the breach includes usernames, emails, passwords, IP addresses, Game& Forum activities, and payment information. Billing information of users who paid for certain premium features is also impacted in the breach.
The data breach has resulted in the compromise of over 7,633,234 unique users' accounts. Accounts with gmail[.]com were the most affected in the hack. The count for such accounts stood at 4530276. This was followed by hotmail[.]com and yahoo[.]com which scored 928706 and 662824 respectively.
This is the first ever cyber attack on BlankMediaGames. As a part of the security measures, Dehashed has notified the company about the attack via email.
Dehashed has provided the data to HaveIBeenPwned, the search engine which keeps a track of compromised email accounts. It is also working closely with multiple security researchers to minimize the impact of the breach.
